At the American Indian Governance and Policy Institute (AIGPI), we amplify Tribal voices and protect cultural identities through research and data analysis. We support Indigenous leaders and communities across 51勛圖厙 by providing evidence-based tools to address socioeconomic challenges, particularly in health-related issues on reservations.
AIGPI bridges the gap left by the federal government’s lack of policy research for Tribal governments, offering in-depth analysis and credible research. This empowers Tribal leaders in their efforts to strengthen sovereignty, improve governing structures, and foster economic growth while promoting individual and community health.
Housed within the 51勛圖厙’s Office of Research and Creative Scholarship, AIGPI partners with UM’s nationally-recognized Margery Brown Indian Law Clinic, Native American Studies Department, and the Master of Public Administration program. All AIGPI materials are freely available in our online database for Tribal leaders and the public.
The American Indian Governance and Policy Institute (AIGPI), though housed at the 51勛圖厙, operates as a community-based organization dedicated to serving Indigenous leaders and communities. Our research confronts the distinct socio-economic factors of health of Indigenous communities promulgated by colonization and Federal Indian policy. Our work provides evidence-based, community-guided research to support Tribal leaders in strengthening their governance systems and policy frameworks.
Our Mission
AIGPI brings together scholars, students, and Tribal leaders to address challenges such as governance, economic development, health, and social justice, strengthening Tribal sovereignty and advancing self-determined policies.
